Mission: Pi Mu Epsilon is the national honor society that honors high scholastic achievement in mathematics.
Chapter History: The University of Connecticut is the Alpha Chapter of Pi Mu Epsilon and became part of the national chapter on May 18, 1963.
Membership eligibility:
Undergraduate students
Students who have completed the equivalent of 5 or 6 semesters (60-84 credits) must have an overall grade point average in all courses of 3.2 or better; a student who has completed 7 or 8 semesters (or 85 or more credits) must have an overall GPA of 3.0 or above. At least 18 credits of 200's and 300's level mathematics credits must have been earned at the University of Connecticut. In addition, there are the following requirements concerning the mathematics GPA. (Courses numbered below 2000 (200) are not included in the averages below, nor is a grade in Mathematics 200, 201W, 202W, 242W, 247, 248, or 291W (now 2784, 2794W, 2194W, 2720W, 2010, 2011, 3670W), or Statistics 3484 (200) or 3494W (202W).)
MATHEMATICS MAJORS: GPA in Mathematics courses of 3.4 or higher for 5th and 6th semester students; GPA in mathematics courses of 3.2 or higher for 7th and 8th semester students. In addition, the student must have passed at least four of the courses MATH 2710 (213) (or 2141-2142 (243-244)), 2210 (227) (or 2144 (246)), 3230 (216), 3150 (273), 3151 (274).
MATHEMATICS-STATISTICS MAJORS: GPA in Mathematics and Statistics courses of 3.4 or higher for 5th and 6th semester students; 3.2 or higher for 7th and 8th semester students. In addition, the student must have passed MATH 2410 (211) (or 2420 (221)) and 2210 (227) (or 2144 (246)) and STAT 3375 (230) and 3445 (231).
MATHEMATICS-ACTUARIAL SCIENCE MAJORS: GPA in Mathematics courses of 3.4 or higher for 5th and 6th semester students; 3.2 or higher for 7th and 8th semester students. In addition, the student must have passed at least four of the courses MATH 2210 (227) (or 2144 (246)), 3170 (232) (or STAT 3965 (235)), 3634 (276), 3630 (287), 3631 (288).
APPLIED MATHEMATICAL SCIENCE MAJORS: GPA in Mathematics courses of 3.4 or higher for 5th and 6th semester students; 3.2 or higher for 7th and 8th semester students. In addition, the student must have passed at least four of the courses MATH 2710 (213), 2210 (227) (or 246), 3710 (204) or 3410 (272), 3510 (281), 3511 (282).
Graduate students
Graduate students who have passed the Ph.D. preliminary exam and are not already members of the society are invited to join.
