Mission: Phi Beta Kappa is the nation's oldest undergraduate honors organization. Its purpose is to recognize, reward, and encourage scholarship in the liberal arts and sciences.

Chapter History: Phi Beta Kappa was first founded in 1776 at the College of William and Mary. The University of Connecticut became a chapter in 1956.

Membership eligibility: The number of juniors and seniors selected each year corresponds to ten percent of the graduating class for that year. There is a minimum required GPA of 3.7 for juniors and 3.4 for seniors, but in recent years the cut-off point has been higher because of large numbers of students with higher averages. The selection is also restricted to majors in Liberal Arts and Sciences.
